JBuilder windows don't paint properly. What can I do?
Java 2 JVMs on Windows utilize DirectX for AWT (and Swing) classes. These demands a properly-implemented DirectX driver for the video card. A number of cards are known to have flaws in their drivers.

See Borland FAQ:

  http://community.borland.com/article/0,1410,20480,00.html

Note: Where the FAQ says to check JBuilder.config, also check jdk.config.

This problem continues JBuilder 5's bundled Sun JVM 1.3.0 for Windows. The same fix applies to JB5 as to JB4.

It probably also holds for JVM 1.3.1, since the problem is in the Windows video drivers.

It appears that one of the symptoms has finally been corrected for JDK 1.4. See this Bug Parade item for details:

If you're using a dual-headed video system and experiencing problems, there is an additional workaround for some driver bugs which may help. I don't know exactly what this is supposed to do, but it is suggested for use with some JVMS:

  -Dsun.java2d.pmoffscreen=false

I saw this referenced on the java-linux@blackdown.org mailing list.

This is a bug in Sun's JDK 1.3. It seems to be fixed in JDK 1.3.1 Beta. Borland does not support JB4 on 1.3.1 but you can replace JDK 1.3 with 1.3.1 by editing JBuilder4/bin/jdk.config and editting all paths appropriately.

The autorun cdrom launches the file install_windows.exe. This executable seems to be the one Norton AV dislikes.

Try to install JBuilder by executing "install.jar" instead. This assumes you already have a jdk on your machine and that it groks jar files.

If doubleclicking on the jar file in Explorer doesn't work, try this:

(Answer) (Category) FAQ-O-Matic : (Category) Windows-specific :
I need to see JBuilder's console window, but it's hidden. How can I see it?
John McGrath writes:

I use a program called Vern (http://oneguycoding.com). It is a virtual desktop utility, but it has that capability built into it. To show a hidden window, open the properties dialog and go to the "Processes" tab. Select the "Show Hidden" checkbox, and then select the JBuilder console window in the list. The window should have the same name as the executable; it is named "D:\Java\JBuilder4\bin\JBuilder.exe" for JBuilder's console window on my system. Then press the "Show" button and you should see the window.

It can be pretty handy if you need to see JBuilder's output and have not already redirected the output. I have used it to look at JBuilder's window on a number of occasions.

And in case you were wondering, you can install it on a system and use it without rebooting. I once ended up with a hidden window as a result of another virtual desktop program failing, so I could not do a save, and I had several hours of work invested. If I tried to shut the system down, it would warn me that the work was not saved, but the dialog had no save option -- just quit and cancel. I could not bring myself to press quit. I finally thought of Vern, installed it, and made the window visible again. Vern saved my bacon that time.

It is also interesting to scrounge around looking at all of the "windows" that exist on your system.

2001-Apr-28 2:11pm gyles19@visi.com

Additionally and just in order to see JBuilder or installed OpenTools generated console outputs, the JB IDE Logger OpenTool can be used, see:
http://codecentral.borland.com/codecentral/ccweb.exe/listing?id=15783
This OpenTool allows to redirect stdout/stderr messages into an accessable text logfile, which can be previewed from inside the JBuilder IDE.

Beside Vern, which AFAIK is not free, there is a free tool called "WinForce" see http://www.donutstudios.de which beside hundreds of other things, allows to show up hidden windows and processes etc. too!
However, note that in order to use it on Windows 2000, you need at least version 1.5 of Winforce.

SYMCJIT.DLL is an old copy of the Symantic JIT. JBuilder 3.5 doesn't need it. You can simply rename the dll file to hide it, or you can track and which older application uses it and unstall it.

Also note that Pentium 4 cpus have difficulty running the JBuilder Installer (or any older JVM which has not been patched to run properly on the P4.)

JBuilder hangs when I select Tools/IDE Options/Display.
When you select the Display tab, JBuilder asks the JVM for a list of available fonts. If any of those font files are damaged, the JVM will hang.

The solution is to find and replace the damaged font file, but this can be difficult.

The first step I take is to force Windows to refresh all of the standard font files. Open the Display controls, and change the Large/Small Font setting. Make sure the change takes effect, then change it back. This will force Windows to reload the font files and should take care of the problem.

If it doesn't, the few font files provided with the JVM itself may be damaged. Fixing those may require reinstalling the JDK.
2001-Jan-20 11:15am gyles19@visi.com

Another possiblity is that your fonts folder has shortcuts in it. See the following Borland FAQ:

  http://community.borland.com/article/0,1410,26560,00.html

2001-Jan-22 7:19pm gyles19@visi.com
It is important to note that the process does take a long time to complete and that it can spend quite a long time on a single font. If you think it has hung up, note the font that it is working on and then wait 5 minutes to see if it makes any progress.

This happens if you launch the installer using a UNC path.

I'm trying to install JBuilder 5 on Windows ME. The jbuilder5/bin directory looks okay and JBuilder 5 will launch. But, when I continue installation with the Documentation and the Samples, I get this error: "The correct version of JBuilder Foundation could not be found. Please refer to setup.html for instruction on how to correctly install JBuilder". I've removed my virus checker and tried everything in the setup.html and in the Install FAQ.
One user reports that his Windows ME machine already had a copy of Sun's SDK 1.3.1. He tried uninstalling SDK 1.3.1, then installing JBuilder 5, and both the documentation and the samples installed without problems.

Apparently JBuilder 5 will not install properly on Windows ME if the Sun SDK 1.3.1 is present. (I do not know why.)

The same user noted that a Windows 2000 machine which also had SDK 1.3.1 installed had no difficulties installing JBuilder 5, so the problem appears to be limited to Windows ME.

When I launch the JB5 installer (or just insert the auto-play CDRom), I get the following dialog: "javaw.exe - Application Error, The instruction at "0x5007268e" referenced memory at "0x0004a8b8". The memory could not be "written". Click on OK to terminate the program. Click on cancel to debug the program" - my operating system is win 2000 professional
This error is similar to the one triggered by Nortan Anti-Virus. Try disabling NAV (or even uninstalling it, it tends to leave services running even when you tell it to sleep.)

My Win98 machine has 768Meg of ram. When I try to launch JBuilder6, I get the following message from Win32 : "not enough memory to launch this program." When I change my system settings to only use 512Meg, JBuilder launches.
This is a bug in Microsoft Windows 95/98/98SE/ME.

(Answer) (Category) FAQ-O-Matic : (Category) Windows-specific :
How can I set the icon for an executable built with JBuilder's Native Executable Builder?
This refers to setting the icon that will be displayed in the Windows explorer for the executable .EXE file. This is not the same thing as setting the icon displayed in the application's frame when the program runs.
Windows Explorer takes the icon from a resource in the executable file, and resources are normally linked into the executable. Since JBuilder does not actually build an .EXE file from scratch (it just appends the application jar file to the end of a pre-built executable), it cannot do this very easily.
I know of one tool that you can use to modify the icon resource for the executable after JBuilder creates it, a freeware program named Resource Hacker. I am sure there are others available.
