Subject: Plymouth Concert Band Announces Spring Concert
Date: Tue, 6 May 2003 11:33:58 -0500
PLYMOUTH - Mike Nelson, whose new novel "Mike Nelson's Death Rat!" features a giant rat terrorizing a town a la Godzilla on its cover, will emcee the Plymouth Concert Band's spring concert, "Monster Hits: Gandalf vs. Godzilla!". Author And Mystery Science Theater Star Mike Nelson To Emcee Plymouth Band Concert
Nelson is well known to fans of the Comedy Central/SciFi Channel TV show "Mystery Science Theater 3000," on which he was trapped in a satellite with a crew of robots and forced to watch (and heckle) one terrible old movie after another. He will sign copies of his new novel-the hilarious tale of a terrible writer who concocts a novel about a giant rat (but of course, there's a lot more to it than that)-following the concert.
Nelson will emcee a concert that includes a performance of Eric Whitacre's "Godzilla Eats Las Vegas!", a musical rendition of what happens when the legendary lizard gets loose and interrupts-permanently-performances by Frank Sinatra, Wayne Newton and a legion of marching Elvis impersonators. Film clips from classic Godzilla films will get the audience into the mood for a metropolis-stomping good time.
"When we saw the cover of his book, we knew we wanted him to be our emcee," said Eric Moon of the band, adding, "We can only hope he doesn't heckle us, MST3K-style."
Also on the bill is "Gandalf," a movement from Johan de Meij's "Lord of the Rings" symphony; "Profanation" and "Four Dances from West Side Story," both by Leonard Bernstein; Duke Ellington's "Caravan," and "Satchmo!", a tribute to Louis Armstrong. The winner of the band's high school soloist competition, Wayzata High School junior Vicki Tam of Plymouth, will perform the Adagio from Mozart's Clarinet Concerto.
Admission is free.
The Plymouth Concert Band is a musically excellent and fun-loving group of 60 adult musicians conducted by David Elmhirst and supported in part by the Plymouth Fine Arts Council and the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council. Its mission is to embody the finest wind band traditions-which usually do not include attacks by giant lizards.
The public is invited and very welcome to Plymouth Concert Band's FREE spring concert emceed by Mike Nelson, "Monster Hits: Gandalf vs. Godzilla!" to be held May 18 at 3 p.m. at Wayzata High School, 4955 Peony Lane N., Plymouth.

Date: Thu, 1 May 2003 10:42:56 -0500
PLYMOUTH-- The Plymouth Concert Band (PCB) is delighted to announce the winner of its first annual High School Soloist Competition. Clarinetist Vicki Tam of Plymouth won $250 in prize money and the opportunity to perform her contest piece with the band at its concert May 18, 2003 at 3 p.m. at Wayzata High School. A panel of three experienced musicians from the Plymouth Concert Band made the selection. Plymouth Band Names Winner Of High School Soloist Competition
Tam, a junior at Wayzata High School, performed the Adagio from the Mozart Concerto for Clarinet. Judges were impressed by her technical mastery of the piece and her expressive playing. Tam is available for interviews by calling 763-553-7933.
Two Wayzata High School freshmen, clarinetist Allison Fortenberry of Maple Grove and horn player Beth Smeltzer of Minnetonka, were also invited to compete in live auditions held April 29. Fortenberry also performed the Adagio from Mozart's Concerto for Clarinet, and Smeltzer played Paul Dukas' Villanelle. "It was a very tough decision," said judge Amy Moon. "All three finalists were excellent. We are lucky to live in an area with such a wealth of musical talent."
The Plymouth Concert Band is a group of 60 adult musicians conducted by David Elmhirst and supported in part by the Plymouth Fine Arts Council and the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council. The band decided to institute a high school soloist contest to strengthen its ties with young musicians in the community, inspire them to bring their audition pieces to the highest possible level, and provide a performance opportunity. Audition notices were sent to all high schools in school districts touching the Wayzata district or within Plymouth city limits. Home-schooled students in those areas also were invited to compete. The band plans to hold the competition every spring.
"I'm really looking forward to having Vicki on the concert," said Elmhirst.
The public is invited and very welcome to hear Tam perform during the Plymouth Concert Band's spring concert, entitled: "Monster Hits: Gandalf vs. Godzilla!" to be held May 18 at 3 p.m. at Wayzata High School, 4955 Peony Lane N., Plymouth. The concert title refers to two pieces on the program, Johan d Meij's "Gandalf" from his "Lord of the Rings" symphony, and Eric Whitacre's "Godzilla Eats Las Vegas." (You've just gotta come and hear what this piece is all about!) The band will also be performing a Louis Armstrong medley entitled "Satchmo!" and two works by Leonard Bernstein, "Profanation (from Jeremiah Symphony)" and "Four Dances from West Side Story".
Note: If you want pictures of the finalists please contact Eric Moon and he will email them to you.
