Detailed Description:
The Meire Grove City Band, established 1883 and the Carlisle Band, established
1894 are two bands that have many years of history behind them, 122 years and
111 years respectfully. The two bands will join together to perform in the
Greewald Barley Day Parade on Sunday, August 7, 2005, in Greenwald, MN. After
the parade, the Carlisle band will play on the Barley Day Festival grounds for
an old-fashioned concert in the park. The Meire Grove band will also join
with the Carlisle band to play a few marches.
These two community bands are unique in that they have functioned continuously
since their organization. Both bands' beginnings go back to the first
settlers, who in Meire Grove arrived in 1858 and in Carlisle arrived in 1869.
The settlers of Meire Grove emigrated from Germany and the settlers of
Carlisle emigrated from Norway. Today, both bands are primarily composed of
musicians who are descendants of those Minnesota pioneers.
Meire Grove, named after pioneer brothers, Herman and Henry Meyer, is a small,
closely knit community in the northwest part of Stearns County.
Named for the township and hamlet northwest of Fergus Falls, Carlisle is
located in OtterTail County.
