Rodeo.Org available for subdomaining

For those that may or may not know, I own the domain rodeo.org, and sometime in the future I may plan to put up a website on that domain once I get my own web server up and running.

But for now the domain is for the most part unused, so I've decided to make it available for subdomaining to anyone that would like to use it for email or perhaps hosting a virtual web server. For more information on getting a rodeo.org subdomain, check out http://nic.rodeo.org/

What is subdomaing?

Okay, let's explain it like this. Internic handles the domain ".org". I ordered the sub-domain "rodeo" under ".org" which means I could have any number of hosts under "rodeo.org". If I had a website, I could have "www.rodeo.org". If I had several hosts on the Internet, I could name the hosts "host1.rodeo.org", "host2.rodeo.org" and so on.

But, I can also give out subdomains under "rodeo.org" for people to use. For example, if the PRCA wanted a subdomain, they could have "prca.rodeo.org" which they could pretty much use for anything they wanted. If a local rodeo association, such as the South Dakota Rodeo Association wanted a subdomain, they could have "sdra.rodeo.com". The same could go for any rodeo association or rodeo affiliated group that would want a subdomain.

What does it cost?

I've already paid my money to Internic, so rodeo.org is available for at least two years, and I will continue paying as long as possible. I don't have any real need to make money off of this domain so my current policy is that any subdomain of rodeo.org will be for free. Keep in mind that I don't have a billing department, a toll-free tech-support number or anything like that. This is just something I'm trying to do for the good of the rodeo community.

What's the catch?

The catch is, that if you want this for a website, or for the purposes of receiving email, you will need to coordinate this with the ISP you obtain services from. They would need to be the "start of authority" for the subdomain and manage the zonefile on their servers. In order to use the domain for a website, the website would need to be running on a "virtual web server". If you wish, point your ISP to this URL for them to refer to, or give them my email address cpj1@visi.com.

Why am I doing this?

Well, for one thing, the domain is just sitting there so why not use it or share it. The domain name system was meant to be subdomained down more that one level and I believe that the current problem we are having with the domain name system would be alleviated if more people gave out subdomains under domains they own. A lot of people out there don't even realise that "sub-domaining" is possible.

How can I get one?

Simple. Fill out this template. If the subdomain is available I'll grant it. To check, a current list of all delegations is available. Some subdomains of rodeo.org will be reserved.

There is always the possibility that there may be conflicts with subdomains. Since this is relatively new, I have no policy on conflicts at this time. If conflicts do arise I will try to handle the situation fairly and honestly. The decisions I make regarding subdomains will become future policy.

Finally, I am limiting subdomains to three per "Administrative Contact". While it is doubtful that anyone would try and gobble up the available subdomains, I would prefer up front to say that I am setting a limit.
