Monthly Community Meetings | |||||
|
Two major community meetings are held each month to allow discussion on important community issues. The Livability Committee meets on the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 6:30PM at the Dunn Bros. Coffee shop across the park on 15th Street. Representatives from our Police CCP/Safe Team attend to discuss crime and safety, and the group gets involved in a variety of ÒlivabilityÓ issues that affect residents daily lives. The Land Use Committee meets on the 4th Monday of each month at 6:30PM in the CLPC office located at 430 Oak Grove Street, also across from Loring Park. This group meets to discuss among others things development projects, historic designation opportunities, zoning change requests and the like. ItÕs a great forum for residents and others to have a say in how our neighborhood looks, not just for now but also for the future. |

When it was
designed and built, the Minneapolis Convention Center turned its back
on the Loring Park neighborhood. Orientation was to the north and the
downtown core. When construction began on a major expansion to the Center,
Council Member Lisa Goodman was able to earmark funding to improve the
connection to Nicollet Avenue along West Grant Street. The CLPC Livability
Committee worked with City staff to redesign West Grant Street to lure
convention goers to Nicollet and the many shops and restaurants along
the now coined ÒEat StreetÓ. Construction will begin in 2002 and include
new sidewalks, lighting, trees and banners to create a much more festive
atmosphere for visitors and residents alike.

Since its first phase opened in the mid 1990s, the Jeremiah housing program located at 16th Street and Laurel Avenue, has provided much needed housing for single mothers with children. A variety of on site programs gives residents the chance to create a much better future for themselves and their children. CLPC and Jeremiah hope to access NRP Affordable Housing money this year to allow for a major expansion of the facility. |

Surface parking lots are the bane of any neighborhood. A delicate balance is necessary to provide parking for neighborhood businessesÕ while not inflicting an eyesore to those who want a vibrant mix of buildings with shops and green space for everyone to enjoy. When Village Green Companies proposed a luxury apartment complex on the site of a large surface parking lot at Harmon Place and 13th Street, CLPC and residents were ecstatic. Village Green was eager to attend CLPC Land Use Committee meetings to listen to neighborhood concerns regarding design and other issues. The result will be a building that will be an asset to the neighborhood and bring new residents to the newly created ÒHarmon Historic DistrictÓ.
