One of the reasons I became involved in DIY media production (making print zines, developing
websites) was my dissatisfaction, which continues, with the kind of information that is
offered to the public through the mass media and, even more so, the way in which information
that is channeled through the mass media is framed.
If you share this critical perspective, I would urge you to make
an effort to support the production of independent, democratic media -- media
produced by those who are committed to engaging in public dialogue that is
freer of commercial and governmental influence.
If you feel that your own perspective or that of one of the communities to which you belong
is inadequately represented by the mass media, consider ways in which
you yourself might participate in media production.
If the phenomenon of zines is unknown to you, I recommend reading Stephen Duncombe's Notes
from the Underground: Zines and the Politics of Alternative Culture as an introduction to the
topic.
