gigography 1977-1982 updated 20 July 2005
May 1977 a
basement restaurant somewhere in Manchester
The Fall's first
gig was part of the Manchester Musician's Collective, organized by
Dick Witts and Trevor Wishart. Dick Witts recalls the venue as being
"like a fashionable restaurant in the late 70s, with everything white.
It was done out like a small white cave. We just took the tables and
chairs out. Mark and Martin, who were taller than the others, had
to bend down because of the low ceiling. It wasn't really public,
the audience was just a group of other musicians sitting around listening."
Martin Bramah
recalls, ""The first gig was recorded, so somebody might have
a tape somewhere. It was a small room and about half the audience
was The Buzzcocks. Mark just let fly with such venom from day one.
I remember he just sort of reached into the audience and virtually
poked his finger up Howard Devoto's nose."
The set included
Hey Fascist, Race Hatred, Bingo Master's Breakout, and closed with
Repetition. Una Baines had not yet got a bank loan for a keyboard
so watched from the audience; the drummer was "Dave," an
insurance salesman and "rabid conservative" who lasted just
the one gig.
Details about
this and a few other 1977 gigs are taken from Simon Ford's excellent
article in the May 2002 issue of Wire.

Friday, June
3 1977 Squat Club, Devas Street, Manchester
The band's second
gig was part of a "Stuff the Jubilee" festival -- also on
the bill were the Drones, Warsaw, the Worst, and the Negatives (w/Kevin
Cummings on drums). The set included Una Baines playing the national
anthem on keyboards. No tape exists?

Saturday, June
25 1977 North East London Polytechnic, Longbridge Road,
Barking
Rock Against Racism
benefit supporting Buzzcocks and the Verbals. Fourth band on the bill
were the Sockets, who became the Purple Hearts. After the gig they
were courted by Gary Bushell. No tape exists?
------------------
Monday, July
4 1977 The Vortex at Crackers, 203 Wardour Street, Soho,
London
Opening night
of the Vortex. No tape exists? Supporting were John Cooper Clarke
and Buzzcocks. From George Gimarc's Punk Diary 1970-1979: "Opening
act The Fall are greeted with great indifference. Their music is aggressive
but not as banal as some openers can be. It's only The Fall's sixth-ever
gig. They got together in Manchester late last year and have a harsh,
unschooled approach to music."
An advert in Melody
Maker (2 July 1977) gives The Fall second billing between Buzzcocks
and John Cooper Clarke and DJ Nic Lee. The bar stayed open till 2
am and entrance cost £1. It was the grand opening night of the
club. Although not advertised playing two numbers that night were
Johnny Thunders and The Heartbreakers. No tape exists?

the worst. Only a few seconds of You Don't Turn Me On survived--someone
please correct me if I'm wrong! Also on the bill: The Doll, The Prefects,

Repetition / Psycho Mafia / Rebellious Jukebox / Frightened / Steppin' Out / Like to Blow / Mess of My / Mother-Sister / Industrial Estate / It's the New Thing / Futures and Pasts / Music Scene
Lineup: The Restricted
/ The Fall / The Durutti Column / Alternative TV / Accident on the
East Lancs / Alchemist / Hammerston Street / Victor Brox / Seventh
Angel / Here & Now. It was later
estimated that 18,000 people attended the festival.
Dave: "You
say about 18,000 people attended Deeply Vale July 78. I was there
- no more than 3000 at most I would say. Anyway, I seem to remember
seeing the Fall there - memory a
little hazy so I may be completely wrong - they played in the pouring
rain. About 30 people
in front of the stage (me included) everyone else huddling in tents
and under bin bags.
Just me and my brother and a few strangers shuffling about in front
of the high stage. Most
animated punter was .... you guessed it - Jon The Postman - oblivious
to the elements. Can
anyone else corroborate my story?"
later Dave added:
"There were 20,000 people there!!! The Fall did play in the afternoon
and the afternoon was compered by Tony Wilson. Been thinking about
the 78 festival - it wasn't entirely a pleasant
experience - Hell's Angels drove through the middle of the site
on motorbikes and generally behaved aggressively. Looking into
people's tents looking for Punks to beat up. Police turned up on
site. Things
got a bit threatening so I left late one night and went home!

"MES introduced
the set with: 'We are The Fall. Rule One: no-one gets on stage.
Rule Two: no spitting. Rule Three: no requests' something that
is somehow imprinted in my head after nearly a quarter of a century
- and still makes me laugh. However, despite being really grumpy
throughout the set, he must have relented on Rule Three as we all
kept shouting for Last Orders and Stepping Out. If my memory serves
me right, he said 'Go on then.... I used to believe everything
I read, but now I'm stepping out' and the band kicked in. We jumped

‘The Fall, Eric’s, Liverpool’, Melody Maker, 17
November 1979, p. 37:
"It’s
been tempting in the past to write off the Fall. After all, they’ve
changed line-up more than Jimmy Pursey’s retired ... The most
disturbing part is the voice - the arrogance of that nagging monotone
lightened only by the occasional scream. ... Mark Smith is the Fall,
the focal point of the group. Hunched, awkward, he typifies the
poet as misfit ... Some people even try to dance. ‘Choc Stock’
is almost jolly, yet the idea of dancers seems unreal, as that sarcastic
voice issues from the anti-hero, with his back to the audience.
... Are The Fall the thinking man’s Public Image?"

Buzzcocks. Guy Ewald in the February 1980 New York Rocker:
"The second-billed Fall saved the show for me. What an attitude
on these guys -- they acted like the audience wasn't even there. Lead
singer Mark E. Smith casually paced the stage, one hand in his pocket,
as he sang, screamed, screeched and preached over the band's pumping,
menacing drone. Without traditional R&R dynamics, the Fall constructed
an impressive wall of sound; the set ended with the guitarists crouched
over their small amplifiers, wrestling the last sounds from their
instruments. A few heads bobbed, a few mouths booed, but as Smith
would later tell the NYR, the Fall are "not about rock 'n' roll,"
but ideas. An intriguing and highly original band."

Wednesday, December 5 1979 Catamaran Hotel, San Diego, California
No tape exists? Bill: "I have been a Fall fan fan for over 25 years and have found no reference to the first gig I saw of them. It was in San Diego, CA, around '78-'79 at a Polynesian style restaurant/nightclub called The Catamaran. They opened for Iggy Pop and had Berlin(!) open for them. They were received poorly as the jock type crowd was apparently there for Iggy. They sang a long version of Rowche Rumble, I never saw or heard of them before this and all I could think of was who the hell are these fuckers singing about "Valium, unh-unh" and the crowd was throwing drinks and Mark E. only got angrier and more insulting as the reception got worse, which turned me around and I began to respect their guts for continuing at all with such a hateful crowd. I later heard "Totally Wired" at a friends house and began buying their records, no easy feat in a cultural backwater like S.D."

Thursday, December
6 1979 Madame Wong's West, Santa Monica, California
Mike recalls:
"The "Opening Band" was the Nu Kats - not oingo
boingo (by comparison oingo boingo would've been a godsend), a god-awful
local new wave band with "Bobbie Zio" on sax and vocals (ask Mark
about these clowns one day why dontcha: we -him and me- were laughing
our asses off at them). They kinda however were the headliner (regardless
of what anybody wants to twist history into). They had a big local
draw. There was a band before them and then the Fall came on after
them, but back then Madame Wong's would always have the headliners
in the middle of the bill. The Fall fans loathed the nukats and the
nukats fans loathed the fall. Once they started leaving during the
fall's set (man did that place clear out quick ! just as well....the
stench of spandex was getting kinda unbearable) there were maybe 25
- 30 of the original 125-150 people that were in the place at the
end of the nukats set. The bill made NO sense at all (but then alot
of bills in LA in those days made no sense).
"The Fall were
really good at Wong's West (so I thought driving home), but...........
.........the Anticlub show [Dec. 14] WAS awesome. EASILY one
of the best 5 -10 shows (out of about 500+) I have ever seen by
anyone ever. In comparison to the anticlub show the wong's show
was totally half-assed."
TJ: "The
Nu Kats -- a horrid skinny-tie/spiky-hairdo "new wave" band
-- was fronted by Freddie Moore, who was the husband at that time
of one Demi Moore (who has retained his surname to this day). They
had a huge following for a brief moment and then disappeared shortly
thereafter, mercifully never to be heard from again."
Greg from Artifix
Records: "Hello. I recently spoke to Rick, bass
player for CATHOLIC DISCIPLINE, and he also recalls playing with
the FALL. He remembers that it was the same night as their Dec. 6th,
1979 show at Madame Wong's West in L.A. Rick remembers that they
played at
Madame Wong's then ran over to play at the Anti-Club with CATHOLIC
DISCIPLINE. Rick
remembers that this show was only the two bands playing together
and that everyone was drinking heavily. Small crowd, but great time."
"Can
you supply any evidence for this date at the Anti-Club? Rick
says he remembers that it was this date as he ripped a flyer off
of the Madame Wong's wall before going over to the Anti-Club for
the late set. Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks, Greg
-Artifix Records"
Unfortunately
I can't supply any evidence for this gig at the Anti-Club, but
it seems quite possible. Can anyone help?

It always annoyed me how Mark Smith complained about the price of tickets when he charged more than anyone else. Honestly it was a dirge. I mean in that era groups didn't need talent - a bit of style, passion or pastiche went a long way, even a good tune. All the Fall had was a grudge. I remember when at the Cedar Club he came off & the audience of male raincoats hollered for an encore, I was behind the bar with the £400 ranting ..'Yes...more depressing, tuneless, worthless' etc when I looked up and there he was, staring at me, a look of horror on his face.(The 'waiting for your encore' place meant hiding behind the bar).
I was so embarrassed I gave the money to the doorman and went home.
The Cramps though, they were the real thing..."

Ian: My favourite
Fall moment was from the very first time I saw them at
Manchester Poly in 1980. Someone in the crowd lobbed a beer can up
and
hit MES with it. MES didn't blink and carried on the song without
pausing. At the end of the song he went over to Hanley and Scanlon
who
pointed out somebody in the crowd about half way back. MES shouts
you
fucking ugly twat and walks off stage reappearing a minute later
in the
crowd striding over to the can lobber and smacking him one in the
face.
A magic moment.
